Spoiled Rotten

Jackson sure has adjusted well to our household. The kids are constantly playing with him - they all love each other. His interactions with the two cats are a little less loving....but they will be friends before they know it. He has had two play dates with other dogs in our family - both went really well. My parents are heading out for a travel adventure soon, so their dog, Jesse, will come stay with us. A temporary, live-in playmate for Jackson. I'm sure they will have fun.

Kendall lovin' on Jackson.

Friday nights are typically movie nights with the kids and me. Jackson is now part of this tradition. He played in their fort last night.

Eric trimming Jackson's nails. Just like his puppy teeth, those nails are razor sharp!

Despite the first few nights of whining right after we brought him home, he has done extremely well. The kennel training (something we have never done before) is also coming along nicely. He sure is a perfect fit for our family!

84

Yesterday was my grandma's 84th birthday. Last time I was over for a visit, I asked her what her favorite flower was and she said red roses. So, after work yesterday, I grabbed some beautiful roses and arranged them in a vase for her. After dinner, we took the kids to see her and sang her "Happy Birthday" a few times, which brought a big smile to her face. She had some candy on her table, which she shared with the kids as they all sat cuddled in her bed. I'm glad we were able to share another birthday with her.

Finger Family

During one of the Christmas gatherings, Eric's mom showed Kendall the finger family song. Since that time, she has been performing the song regularly.

Every.Day.

But it's funny to watch her. I grabbed this little video recently, though she was very tired. I didn't get the whole song because Instagram only allows for 15 second video clips.   I laugh every time she hits brother finger.  ;)

Here's the video of the actual song:

Power

This is so true. Eliminate the unnecessary not only from your life but your mind as well. Everything else falls into place beautifully.

Movie Review: The Judge

This movie packed a powerful cast (Robert Duvall, Robert Downey, Jr., Billy Bob Thornton, Dax Shepard...the list goes on). I have to say, this was one of the best movies I have seen in a long time. Downey, Jr. plays a hot shot attorney, Hank,  who escaped the clutches of small town life in Indiana and vowed to never return. His father, Judge Palmer, played by Duvall, is a judge in that small Indiana town. Hank is called back to the forgotten town when his mother unexpectedly passes away. He trudges through the formalities of the funeral and tries to quickly get back to his normal life. However, his father, the Judge, is suddenly thrown into a murder charge and it takes off from there.

I HIGHLY recommend this movie!

Paint 'n Sip

This week has been crazy hectic. At home, we are training the puppy. At work, the post-trial madness is in full swing. In addition to the post-trial stuff, I had another shareholder request that I be his paralegal. So that now makes four shareholders and a few associates. Needless to say, I'm not at all concerned about that billable hour requirement anymore. Whew!

Last night, a group of us ladies from work headed out to do a paint 'n sip to celebrate a birthday. Some had done this before, but I never had. I like to think I'm somewhat artistic, simply because of my love of scrapbooking. But painting is totally different. I'm more of structured "artist", versus freestyle - hence my dream house that I designed many moons ago when I wanted to be an architect. But I thought, hey, this is beginner painting....can't be all that hard, right? We all met up for drinks and appetizers beforehand, and it was a fun night!

The first thing we did was prime the canvas. This simply involved taking the large paint brush and lightly brushing water all over the canvas.

The next step was to prepare our outline. We did this with yellow paint. We were using acrylic paint, which dries in a couple of minutes and allows you to paint over it with any color.

Brenda and me creating our masterpieces.

Some of our group.

My finished product. The instructor used some strange color combinations, which didn't impress me, but hey, it was all about having fun and we sure accomplished that!

Our full group!

Just in time for the big day of love!

Please Welcome Jackson!

So we couldn't wait for tomorrow to go get this little guy, so we picked him up this morning. He's been on many adventures today, though I am more nervous for tonight. You can tell he's missing his farm life. He's a chocolate lab, and we went many rounds on his name. We finally settled on Jackson (after Jackson/Jax from Sons of Anarchy) and I think it's a good fit for him. I'm excited for this addition to our family!

Gracing Another Cover

Yesterday, I received another e-mail from the Idaho State Bar, advising that they had selected another one of my nature photos to be on the cover of The Advocate, a publication put out by the Bar. This will be my third published cover - how exciting!  This is the picture they selected:

I took this picture last August, right as we passed through Crescent City, California, on our way to the Redwoods. We literally pulled over and ran down to the beach. It was a fun shot. I can't wait to see what it looks like as a cover - I will definitely post a picture once I receive my copy!

One Year

One year ago today, I lost my sweet Kya. There literally isn't a day that passes that I don't think of her. The kids regularly ask about her and it makes me cry every time. I waited so long for that dog and my time with her was cut drastically short. I miss you so much Kya. I love you!

On a side note, we are getting a puppy this weekend. I hope that he can bring some healing and closure to both the kids and me. There has been a huge hole in our hearts since Kya died, and I hope this little guy can return all of those laughs and memories in the form of puppy love.

The Cabin Adventure / Part 3

Monday morning, we decided it was finally time to hit the hot springs. Considering it was a Monday, we figured nearly every hot springs would be empty. We decided to hit Kirkham since it was the closest and easiest hike for the kids.

When we pulled up, we were the only vehicle there, so we were excited to have the place to ourselves.

To me, it was perfect conditions for hot springs: cold, foggy, and we even got a little bit of snow as we sat in the hot water.

It was quite the challenge for Eric to keep his cast out of the water, especially while sitting with Kendall. He managed to get the cast quite wet. Good thing he gets a new one this week!

Carter hiked around to a couple of the various pools - some too hot, some not hot enough. Ultimately, I made him stay in the same pool as us because that river running right below us made me too nervous.

The colors of the river this time of year are my absolute favorite. It's almost like tropical water running through the mountains.

After lunch, we packed it all back up and headed home. With the new snow, we took the drive slower than normal due to the road conditions (we saw a roll-over accident on HWY 17 on the drive up) and the high population of deer and elk on and near the road.

Someone slept the whole drive - just like her grandma. Except her grandma would slap a tooth out of my mouth if I took this picture of her. ;-)

All in all, it was a great trip and lots of R&R was just what the doctor ordered!

The Cabin Adventure / Part 2

Sunday was a very busy day - we had lots to pack in! First up was sledding. The snow was not exactly ideal for sledding - clearly there was plenty of snow, but it had rained and then gotten warm enough to melt down into a solid sheet of ice. Where there wasn't ice, the snow was hard and packed down. Not the best for sledding, but we made it work.

We found a great hill nearby that already had an established sledding "route". Carter wasted no time whatsoever, and was first up the hill. He zoomed down countless times - the energy in that kid!

Just like last year, Kendall still wasn't too interested in sledding. I'm sure this had to do with the hard impact of the snow, versus the soft fluffy landings we prefer. She took one ride down with Eric and called it quits. She puttered around at the bottom of the hill, watching everyone else take turns.

"Hiding" from the camera.

Eric snagged this shot and I have to say, well done! I hate being in front of the camera - maybe this will change once the braces come off in a couple of months.

Once we were back at the cabin, we decided, yet again, to put off the hot springs soak. It had started to snow and quickly dumped about four inches on us. The timing was just about right because it was time for the Superbowl and I had snacks to make! After the snacks were done, but before the game started, I messed around with some of my favorite settings on my camera to create different effects with the snow.

A little bit into the game, the neighbor came over to tell us the deer were at his place, and asked if Carter wanted to feed them. Uh, duh. ;-)  I'm not sure who is more "trained" here because Dale would shake the bag of food and the deer would come hopping down the mountainside across the road, and into his yard. Never a moment of hesitation. The first two to come were the mama and her yearling.

There were about six more on the mountainside who were a little more shy. Didn't take them long to come enjoy the deer food and apples.

(Carter feeding the deer - video)

During halftime, we cooked up some steak for dinner. As the charcoal was on fire, I played more with some fun settings on the camera to get these shots.

After the game was over, Carter made Eric hold true to his promise of a 4-wheeler ride. This kid and the 4-wheelers.....it never ends. ;-)

Kendall has her own version of chess, which doesn't appear to follow any formal rules whatsoever! But it's entertaining to watch her, and she gets quite bossy if you don't play right.

Little turkey.

Stay tuned for the last day of our snowy adventure!
