What a vacation! Banff National Park certainly did not disappoint, nor did it lack for jaw-dropping views everywhere you turned. To be surrounded by such towering mountains was quite humbling. Getting there, however, was quite the journey, especially with three kids in the car. 😝
We decided to stay in Canmore, which is right outside Banff National Park. It was cheaper and certainly less populated. Canmore is a really cute little town, smack in the middle of the Canadian Rockies. There are staggering mountain views in every direction and wildlife all around. The kids saw tons of bunnies every day on all of our walks and hikes.
The town also had a great boardwalk that we explored several times.
One of the first places we explored was Johnston Canyon. This was a big tourist place, so we got there early to avoid tons of people. The water was just beautiful and both lower and upper falls were amazing. The lower falls had this little tunnel where you could get right up next to the falls. We were all pretty drenched after the tunnel, but the kids loved it!
One of main things I wanted to see in Banff was Pyramid Rock, which is in Johnston Canyon. The path leading down to this rock isn't an established path, and you really have to know where you are going to find it. And to complicate it even further, the past is currently blocked off to allow bird nesting that has been compromised by tourist activity over the last few years. Normally I'm a very "let's respect nature" type of person, but this was a one-time shot to find the path and hike down to get these pictures. We were very careful to not disturb anything in or out, and let me tell you.......this view was totally worth it and the pictures don't even do it justice.
