Because We All Know I'm One of THOSE Girls

I've been married for 2 1/2 years now.  And to this day, I still get crap for hyphenating my last name.  It's "not how things are done".  It's rude.  It's disrespectful.  And on and on.  So today, while browsing the web on my lunch hour, I came upon this article on Yahoo! News.  Of course, I would like to share it with my readers for the simple reason that it really touches every point I tried to make to all those nay-sayers when I didn't FULLY change my name.  Frankly, I don't understand why it matters to anyone else.  Yes, it bugs Eric - to this day.  However, the fact that I hyphenated doesn't make me any less invested in my marriage.  It doesn't make me any less of a wife (in my opinion).  It doesn't change my love - both for my husband or my family as a whole.  And if you disagree with that, I invite you to take a step AWAY from my marriage and focus on your own.  (sorry, but true)  So, having said that, feel free to read this article.  Or don't.  I won't be offended.

Hyphenated married name fight heats up on Facebook

Conversations with my man about our future always produce juicy material that I turn around and exploit for purely editorial — and, OK, sometimes basic entertainment — reasons. A recent chat about hyphenating my last name kicked up dust as we talked about my dreams of finishing (which means I’d actually have to start) my PhD within the next five years.

In the heat of my daydreaming, I took my would-be name for a test drive. “Dr. Janelle Harris-Williams,” I swooned like a giddy extra in the “Beauty School Dropout” scene of Grease. Boyfriend 4.0 jutted his bottom jaw, something he does when he’s about to serve up a verbal smackdown. “Harris-Williams!” he scoffed. “I think you mean Dr. Janelle Williams.”

Seems he takes offense to the idea of me tacking his last name on to the one I already have. The move — according to him — says I’m wishy-washy about my commitment and (gasp) that I’m not ready to leave my family and be a wife. When I introduced the subject for discussion on Facebook, turns out plenty of folks from both genders side with his opinion. I didn’t tell him that, though.

There is no level-headed reason why a woman should have to abandon her family’s last name in order to prove her fidelity and allegiance to her man. None whatsoever. The concept is as archaic and patriarchal as, oh I don’t know, forgoing your dreams to be an apron-sporting housewife a la June Cleaver or pretending to be an airhead to appease your guy’s fragile ego. Puh-lease.

According to the recently released 2010 Real Weddings Survey from The Knot, only 6 percent of newlywed women opted to hyphenate their names — the same number reported on the stats from the year before. Responses from the roughly 20,000 brides polled overwhelmingly favored taking their hubby’s name, to the tune of 86 percent.

So it’s not necessarily a fire-hot trend. So I’m in a bit of a minority. At least I’m not flying completely solo. “We definitely see the conversation because everyone has an opinion on it. No one is really right because it’s such a personal decision,” offers Anja Winikka, an obviously brilliant individual who happens to be an editor at The Knot. “As years go by and couples wait longer to get married, more women are choosing to hyphenate because of their careers, especially when people are looking for them on Google.”

Indeed, those of us who have worked hellishly to build up some steam in our respective careers also have professional grounds to hold on to our original surnames. If Eva Parker or Jada Smith had a new flick coming out, the crickets would be chirping and we’d gloss over them like they were as generic and nondescript as Jane Jones. But add the “Longoria” and the “Pinkett,” respectively, the bells and whistles of familiarity go off, and the general public might contemplate going to see the movie. Might.

Because the average age of the American bride is now 27 (up from 25 last year, but who’s counting?), many women don’t want the hassle of converting their longstanding professional identities — email addresses, monogrammed attaches, and all — to a whole new name. "Most of my clients are businesswomen, speakers, or high-level professionals and have built a brand with their names,” says Christine Pembleton, an author who is also president of the aptly named relationship coaching firm, Ready to Be a Wife. “However,” she adds, “I had no problem changing my name. In fact, it was one of the things I looked forward to when I got married." Hmph.

So exactly what does a man have to give up in order to marry a woman? Yet we’re expected to disassociate ourselves from the very families who shaped us into the women men fall in love with and want to marry. If I had been born male, I would’ve had no choice but to carry on the Harris name. But because I have an innie, not an outie, I’m forced to show my Post-Marital Pride by sloughing off part of my identity.

Not I, said the brown cow. Can’t my hyphen rep for both my past and my future — and have a nice ring to it in the process?

Captivated

This is a totally random post, related to nothing specific or exciting. But while I was folding mounds and mounds of laundry tonight (as you can see in the background), Carter was completely captivated by the movie he was watching. I grabbed the camera while he was holding extremely still, and snapped a couple shots of my handsome boy.

On another side note - RAIN.  It's all we seem to get lately.  I have a weekend trip to the cabin planned, which is right around the corner.  I don't need RAIN, I need SNOW!  Come on snow!  I'm thoroughly tired of the rain and this mild winter.

Marry Me - Train

I didn't think it was possible to fall in love with a song, but dang, this is about as good as it gets. Completely simple, yet so powerful.  Turn off the music player at the bottom of my page and then come back and listen to this song.  (on a side note, I just looked at the guitar tabs for it and I'm going to ask Eric to learn this song and play it for me......I love being married to a musician!)

I'm Not Cut Out For Customer Service

And for those who know me, this is not shocking news to you - in fact, you are probably giggling at the mere thought of me having anything to do with customer service.  It's ok.  I laugh with you.  I have zero tolerance for sales pitches - especially at work.

For some reason, the receptionist is out today.  Which is probably good considering the little spat we got into yesterday.  However, when she's gone, that means the rest of us have to answer the phone.  Unbelievable, isn't it?  (just kidding)

So I happened to answer a call this morning and the caller ID said "Web Services".  I knew before I even said "Good morning, " that this call was going to be loads of fun.  Below, I break down the call for your entertainment - please notice that my usual chatty-cathy self is lacking for detail and over-sharing.....this is rare.

Saleswoman:  May I speak with Jeff?

(let me interject here and just say, I love when they call him Jeff and act like they are pals.)

Me:  I can check, may I say who is calling?

Saleswoman:  This is Lisa.

(notice how she doesn't give me the name of the company from where she is calling - I'm sure it just slipped her mind)

Me:  Ok Lisa, does he know what this is regarding?  (yes, we screen calls - we're a law firm)

Saleswoman:  No.

Me:  Ok.  Are you a salesperson?

Saleswoman:  Yes.

Me:  Ok.  He's not going to be interested.

Saleswoman:  (after laughing)  Um, do you even know what I'm selling?

Me:  Nope.  But I know he won't be interested.

Saleswoman:  (laughing again - apparently this is quite humorous to her) Well, do you do any sort of advertising for your business?

Me:  No.

Saleswoman:  Not even on the internet?

Me:  No.

Saleswoman:  Ok, well I guess that's why I couldn't find you on Google.

(which begs the question, how did she find our number?)

Me:  Yup, guess we aren't on there.

Saleswoman:  Ok, well I guess if he's not interested in something he knows nothing about, our conversation is over.

Me:  Yup, it sure is.

CLICK.

See, this is why I never pursued a career that had anything to do with customer service.  And I'm sure all of those prospective employers out there thank their lucky stars I never applied.  ;)  Some of us just aren't cut out to weed through the B.S. day in and day out.

A Not So Family-Friendly Visit to Toys 'r Us

On Saturday, we took a little trip to Toys r’ Us to get some of Carter’s birthday presents, and to put his bike on hold. While we were standing at the Customer Service desk, a man walked in with one of those massive baby bouncers – the ones that are like 3 feet wide, with every conceivable toy attached to it. He interrupted us and demanded to speak with a manager. First wrong move – wait your turn, jerk. So instead of creating a scene with this guy (he does that on his own a little later, don’t you worry), we move aside and let him begin his story with the Customer Service lady. He attempts to explain, in a remotely polite manner, that he has had this bouncer for quite some time, doesn’t have the receipt, but would like to either return it for something else, or get his money back as he deems it unsafe for his child. The Customer Service gal politely explains to him that the time for him to return the item has now expired, and without a receipt, they cannot issue a refund. The man’s face starts to go red and I can tell this is going to escalate into a real issue. He explains his situation again, insisting that this bouncer is not safe for his child – that pieces continually get pulled off (um, what child doesn’t destroy their toys?), and that he’s not mad at the Customer Service gal, he just wants some “justice”. At this point, the manager has arrived and attempts to calm down the situation. The manager explains, word for word, what the customer service gal had previously explained. Let me tell you, this did NOT go over well with the man. He finally said “you know what, nevermind! Clearly this isn’t going to get me anywhere.” And he storms off. So everyone is basically standing there staring at each other, wondering if this really just happened, when the man turns around and says “you know what, on second thought, YOU keep this piece of shit” and he literally hurls the bouncer back into the store….where it bounces (ha ha) and skids for several feet before slamming into a display rack. I raised an eyebrow and told the guy “well that was totally inappropriate” (Eric quickly hushed me), but the guy was too fired up to even hear anyone as he stormed out.

So I’m wondering, what is it that causes people to act this way, not only in public, but in a kids’ store with numerous families WITH children, standing around watching?! I get that he was mad about the product he had purchased – I’ve been there. But to stand there and literally chuck a bouncer back into the store? Sheesh! Either he needs some serious anger management, or he was just THAT desperate for his refunded money….possibly to go score his drug de jour?

Love The Way You Lie

When I first heard this song, I was disgusted. Mostly because it's no secret Rhianna has been through the domestic violence experience. And for her to sing a song advocating it just floored me.  But once I gave the song a chance and actually viewed the music video, my opinion has changed. For those who have never been through it, this is a pretty accurate depiction, and I'm actually glad that Eminem and Rhianna did this song and video.

(make sure you turn off the music player at the bottom of the page before turning on the video)
