June's Literary Adventures

June was another busy month with sports and getting back to work, so there wasn't as much reading time as I would normally like.  However, it was certainly a productive month with two books that completely re-shaped my marriage.

The Light We See was just an "ok" book. The plot and pace seemed rather forced.

The Garden of Discontent was a dark book, and several components were wrong in so many ways. But it was well-written and I was satisfied with the ending.

Choosing Marriage was definitely a game changer. It took over a month for us to power through, slowly and with great attention to detail. It prompted many long and emotional conversations. While the author got a little preachy at times, with several Bible references, the underlying messages were received loud and clear. The biggest two take-aways: we have daily choices, and nothing is worth harder work than your greatest investment (your marriage); and choosing WE over ME.

Hold On But Don't Hold Still is written by a lifestyle speaker I follow. Writing a book wasn't on her agenda, but she had so many stories and lessons to tell, and I'm glad she did. She has so many powerful messages about life and failure and getting back up and parenting struggles and marriage/divorce struggles and personal struggles. I'm so glad I read this book as her greatest message was about being authentic and intentional, even if it gets messy.
