Day 2 was going to be a weather day, so we planned accordingly. The rain wasn't supposed to hit until later in the afternoon, so we did all of our exploring in the morning/early afternoon.
We first went to Cape Disappointment (named this because an explorer failed to find the mouth of the river he was looking for, hence the disappointment) and walked through some trails to get to the North Head Lighthouse. It's very simple and cute.
Then we drove a little further south to see the Peter Iredale shipwreck from 1906. In looking online, how much of the ship is visible is dependent on the tide. Sometimes it is fully covered, and other times fully visible. Very cool!
Then we drove into Astoria and spent a few hours exploring various shops around the pier, including a pet store that had cats and kittens available for adoption. I'll let you guess how many times the kids asked us to go back and adopt kittens.
Then the rain hit, so we wrapped things up in Astoria and headed back across the bridge to Long Beach to this quirky little museum/gift shop. We grabbed some pizza to-go from a local pizza joint and ate dinner back at the condo. The kids decided they wanted to shoot some pool, play ping pong, and take a dip in the outdoor, heated pool and hot tub. While they did that, we bundled up and walked along the Discovery Trail. They currently have the boardwalk all torn up for renovation, but you can still walk along the path on the Discovery Trail. The actual beach itself in Long Beach is 28 miles long and you can drive right on the beach. Very cool!
